The MTA steps up UK regional outdoor and online advertising
A series of outdoor regional advertising campaigns have been undertaken in the UK for the month of June to strengthen existing air routes to Malta and to increase the awareness of new routes. The outdoor campaigns, in Newcastle, Birmingham and Manchester, involve large ‘wrapping’ or ‘siding’ advertisements on taxis (Newcastle) and buses (Birmingham and Manchester) as well as 40 second video adverts on large outdoor LCD display screens (Birmingham).More at: pr33.

BPO Holiday Costs Barometer – Malta 3rd in Euro zone competitiveness rankings
Last month the British Post Office issued their annual Holiday Costs Barometer, listing prices for various goods and services that one may purchase while on holiday. In this year’s survey, eighteen countries from around the world were featured, including Malta, all being popular or up-and-coming holiday destinations. The prices sampled included: A three course meal for two, sun cream, a British tabloid newspaper, cigarettes and a cup of coffee, amongst others. From the list provided by the Post Office, Malta ranked the third best value-for-money destination from all the Eurozone countries.Official BPO press release available for download: [pdf].

FTI organises "Mega Fam trip" – 1000 travel agents visit Malta
Details regarding the “mega fam trip” to Malta involving 1,000 German travel agents were given during a press conference at the Cavallieri Hotel St Julians, on Sunday the 17th May. The press conference was addressed by Air Malta CEO Mr Joe Cappello, MTA Chairman Mr Sam Mifsud, FTI CEO Mr Dietmar Gunz and the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Dr Mario De Marco.More at: pr16.
Dr Mario de Marco addresses business breakfast
Speaking during a business breakfast focusing on the tourism industry, tourism parliamentary secretary Dr Mario de Marco referred to various aspects of the industry and said that Malta should not just focus on the usual tourism areas but also on the rural aspect and on village cores.More at: pr22.
Children’s tourism campaign “Apprezza” launched
The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Dr Mario de Marco, recently launched a tourism awareness campaign for children – “Apprezza”. Attending this launch at the Malta Tourism Authority Head Office, were the children who appeared in the video advert produced for this campaign.More at: pr9.

A publication featuring a selection of projects funded by the Grant Scheme for Tourism Enterprises (2004-2006) has been launched, as part of the programme of activities marking the fifth anniversary of Malta's accession to the European Union.More at: pr29.

Survey of hotels' energy consumption
The Malta Intelligent Energy Management Agency (MIEMA) will be carrying out a survey in hotels with the aim to test their energy sustainability by collecting information on existing facilities and practices; and providing them with the opportunity to reap the benefits of responsible tourism investment, by guaranteeing quality services, efficiency, strategic and profitable long-term growth of the tourism industry.More at: pr27.

A Taste of Malta in the heart of London
Last month MICE (Meetings, Incentives Conferences and Events) organisers gathered at Meza, a top restaurant in London to sample delicious Maltese culinary delicacies as part of the Malta Tourist Office’s ‘Taste of Malta’ evening. The evening gave MICE organisers in the UK the chance to sample some of the Mediterranean’s best cuisine as well as meet and talk to the large number of Maltese Destination Management Companies (DMCs), hotels and conference venues that were present to showcase their services.More at: pr2.
Malta’s own Aaron Ciantar wins Malta Grand Prix of the Sea
Aaron Ciantar won the 2009 edition of the Malta Grand Prix, racing in Seagull Chaudron in the Endurance Race. The Seagull Chaudron falls into the SuperSport Class.More at: pr23.
Medieval Mdina Flower and Pageantry festival
Last month, the ancient city of Mdina was brought alive with the Medieval Mdina Flower and Pageantry festival. The Silent City was the romantic backdrop for this festival, which incorporated re-enactments with the participation of local and foreign groups.More at: pr24.
Fireworks competition results
The 2009 Malta International Fireworks Festival competition official results were announced on the 5th May. The festival, organised by the Malta Tourism Authority and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism was held on the 1st and 2nd of May. 11 local fireworks factories and three foreign ones participated in the competition.More at: pr11.
Valletta Grand Prix – Historic & Classic Car Event
The 1st edition of the Valletta Grand Prix and Classic Car event, took place between the 14th and the 17th of May. The event was a delight to classic car enthusiasts in general. The owners of such cars participating in the event, had the exhilarating experience of racing round Valletta’s ring road in time trials. The spectators could enjoy the beauty of these classics racing round Valletta in a sight not to be seen often. There was also the opportunity to have a closer look when these cars were on show in static displays in Republic Street.More at: pr6.

Ryanair launches Madrid route
On the 30th of April Ryanair launched its 11th route to Malta, that from Madrid. This is the second route flying to and from Spain as Ryanair flies to Barcelona, Girona.More at: pr18.
Malta Poker Events - Malta Chilipoker Open 2009
The Malta Chilipoker Open 2009, hosted by Malta Poker Events attracted 149 players who faced off at the Portomaso Casino, Malta, for the first Maltese tournament ever scheduled to receive local and international broadcast exposure.More at: pr12.

Maltese Chefs’ Team Glasgow Debut
The recently formed Junior National Team of Malta recently took part in the Scothot Knorr World Culinary Grand Prix in Glasgow. The event is organized every two years by the World Association of Chefs Societies; this years’s event consisted of nine countries including Malta and these were: Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, England, USA, Malta, India, Wales, Scotland.
