Ms Tanya Sultana – Head of Research, addressing the students at St Theresa College Girls' Junior Lyceum

Students increase Tourism awareness

As part of the activities organised by the Business Studies Department at St. Theresa College Girls’ Junior Lyceum, Mriehel, officials from the Malta Tourism Authority were invited to conduct an educational session on ‘Tourism’, for students taking Business Studies as an option.

Two officials from the MTA, namely Mr Leslie Vella – Director, Marketing Support & Development and Ms Tanya Sultana – Head of Research conducted the first part of the session. Mr Vella took the students for an ‘imaginative trip’ to another country and focused on several aspects that the tourist would come into contact with during a holiday abroad. He spoke about the recent trends in tourism and the marketing campaign used by MTA. On her part, Ms Sultana illustrated various facts relating to the importance of tourism for the Maltese economy and the different types of incoming tourists. Also present for the session was Mr Joseph Tanti – Head, Industry HR Development and Andre Arciola who coordinated the activity on behalf of the MTA.

Following the talks, workshops were held so that students could discuss and come up with ideas on various issues relating to tourism, amongst which climate effects, environmental issues and the impact of tourists arriving on cruise liners. The students participated enthusiastically and at the end, a spokesperson from each group summarised the main points raised. Meanwhile, the MTA officials commented on these points and applauded the students for their input.

Ms Marcelle Camilleri, teacher at St Theresa school, who coordinated the session on behalf of the school said “the whole session was a success and enjoyable to all involved. There is no doubt that students benefit from such initiatives outside the normal environment of their classroom. Such activities help widen their perspectives and increase their experiences, whilst proving to be an asset for the future.”
