Top travel writers sampling Malta

The British Guild of Travel Writers (BGTW), founded in 1960, brings together top writers, photographers, producers and radio and television presenters involved in the world of travel. Malta has been honoured as destination of choice for their 2008 Annual General Meeting held yesterday at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

In the course of their work, the members of this prestigious Guild, cover all facets of travel from white water rafting to sun worshipping, from the furthest North to the deepest South. They are savvy travellers who between them have quite possibly visited every corner of the earth, produced thousands of articles for hundreds of media and many boast travel and guide books to their names.

Back in November 2007, the Malta Tourism Authority assisted by the Fortina Spa Resort and Airmalta, had sponsored and hosted the BGTW’s annual awards ceremony held at London’s iconic Savoy Hotel. This impeccably organised and memorable event went down a treat. The 402 members were treated to a feast of the senses, where magical Malta came under the spotlight as a haven for varied top class events to suit all ages and tastes, gastronomical delights, visual beauty and as an Island so steeped in Culture, History and Heritage that every square inch of our little islands has a story to tell.

This event led to the AGM being held in Malta where after a teaser at the dinner, numerous writers travelled to Malta to sample it first hand. Apart from the AGM on the 23rd January, the writers who are in majority staying over for a few days, will be taking part in various tours of the Islands, themed in many ways such as Gastronomy, History, Activity and Adventure and such. The BGTW brought their AGM to a close with a Gala Dinner at Palazzo Parisio, attended by the Hon. Min. Dr Francis Zammit Dimech and a farewell reception at the Casino Di Venezia today. The members’ programmes are being organised by the Hospitality Division at the Malta Tourism Authority, together with the MTA UK office under the direction of Mr Chris Fenech.
