June 2007issue #004

Constant monitoring during the peak summer months should reduce the inconvenience caused by beach-wares.

Monitoring of operators' use of Ghadira beach

In preparation for the coming beach invasion, the Malta Tourism Authority has started monitoring the bay to better manage the needs of beach users and operators. A new layout for operator's umbrellas and deckchairs is already being enforced and monitored for furhter improvement during the summer months.

The MTA has already started a Beach Management process at Ghadira Bay as of June 1, with the immediate aim of controlling the setting up of umbrellas and haphazard use of the public areas by operators. Most of Ghadira Bay has been practically taken over by the beach operators licensed to rent umbrellas and deckchairs on the sand. A number of these have a licence to operate and display beach furniture whilst 2 others may only rent out beach ware.

Since the enforcement passed to the MTA, we expect better control of the concessions and operators also thanks to new contracts for the beach operators.

Whilst most of the problems are now under control, there are still a number of issues which must be addressed, including the management and control of large scale BBQs currently being discussed with the Local Council.

Before and after: pictures indicate the difference in laying out beach furniture with the introduction of beach management.
