A MTA representative giving an overview on the various careers available in tourism
MTA participates in a Careers Day at De La Salle College
The Industry HR Development Unit within the Malta Tourism Authority participated in a Careers Day, organised by De La Salle College, which took place on the 26th April.
The MTA hosted a colourful information stand, which successfully attracted over 500 students who showed an interest in careers within the hospitality and tourism industry. The students were very eager to put forward any questions and concerns with regards to the various tourism career pathways available. In addition, students were very interested to learn about typical tourists’ experiences.
This MTA unit, responsible for developing human resources for the tourism industry at large, is in its 6th year with the CHOICE programme, which is a career awareness scheme aimed at fourth and fifth formers in secondary schools.
The programme has been running since the start of this scholastic year and has seen a very high participation rate from secondary schools around Malta. This was made possible through the cooperation of various guidance teachers in schools, as well as people from the hospitality industry.
CHOICE aims to raise the profile of the tourism sector as a career. It has so far reached over 10,000 students. Twenty-nine secondary schools have participated in this year’s programme. Furthermore, the unit also works with guidance teachers to make them aware of the opportunities offered.
The MTA has also issued two publications in the series of Career Guides aimed at secondary school students. Career Guide Vol. 1 covers 23 careers that may be pursued in the hospitality and catering sectors, while the Vol. 2 covers a further 16 sectors within the travel and tourism sectors.
